About The Tarot Academy
We believe tarot education should be structured, accessible, and grounded in both tradition and modern practice. Here is who we are, what we stand for, and why we built this academy.
Our Mission
The Tarot Academy exists to provide the structured tarot education that the internet largely lacks. While there is no shortage of tarot content online — blog posts, YouTube videos, social media tips — most of it is fragmented, inconsistent, and difficult to follow as a learning path. We set out to create something different: a complete, organized curriculum that takes a student from absolute zero to confident, ethical reader.
Our nine-lesson curriculum is designed like a university course. Each lesson builds on the one before it. Concepts are introduced in logical sequence. Practice exercises reinforce each new skill. By the time you complete the final lesson on reading for others, you have not just learned about tarot — you have practiced it at every step along the way.
Teaching Philosophy
Our approach to tarot education rests on four principles:
1. Structure Before Intuition
We teach card meanings, spreads, and interpretation techniques before addressing intuitive development. This is deliberate. Intuition without a foundation of knowledge is unreliable. Knowledge without intuition is mechanical. By building the technical foundation first, we create the stable base from which genuine intuitive skill can develop organically. This is why our Intuitive Reading lesson appears as Lesson 8 rather than Lesson 1.
2. Practice Over Theory
Every lesson includes hands-on exercises. We believe that reading cards — actually shuffling, drawing, interpreting, and journaling — is the only reliable way to internalize tarot knowledge. You cannot learn tarot by reading about it any more than you can learn to swim by studying water. Our curriculum is designed to get cards in your hands as quickly as possible and keep them there.
3. Ethics as Foundation
Ethical practice is not an afterthought in our curriculum — it is woven throughout. From the first lesson's emphasis on tarot as a tool for empowerment (not prediction) to the final lesson's comprehensive framework for reading responsibly, we treat ethics as fundamental to competent practice.
4. Respect for Tradition and Innovation
We teach the established traditions — Rider-Waite-Smith meanings, historical context, classical correspondences — while encouraging students to develop their own interpretive voices. Tarot is a living tradition that has evolved for centuries. We honor its history while embracing the personal and creative dimensions that make each reader's practice unique.
Our Team
The Tarot Academy curriculum was developed by a team of experienced practitioners, educators, and researchers. Our contributors bring decades of combined experience in tarot reading, teaching, and writing.
Curriculum Development
Our nine-lesson course structure was developed through extensive research into adult learning theory, tarot pedagogy, and the real-world learning paths that successful readers have followed. We interviewed practicing professional readers, surveyed tarot students about their biggest learning challenges, and reviewed the leading tarot textbooks to ensure our curriculum addresses the most important topics in the most effective sequence.
Platform Reviews
Our guide to the best online tarot reading sites was created through months of hands-on testing. We conducted multiple readings on every platform we reviewed, evaluated reader quality, tested customer support, and analyzed user feedback patterns. Our methodology page explains our evaluation process in detail.
Card Library
Our 78-card reference library synthesizes interpretations from multiple authoritative sources in the RWS tradition, refined through the practical reading experience of our team members. Each card entry includes upright and reversed meanings, keywords, and study notes designed to aid memorization and deepen understanding.
Why We Review Reading Platforms
We are primarily educators, but we also recognize that professional readings serve an important role in any tarot student's development. Experiencing a skilled professional reader demonstrates techniques that self-study alone cannot convey — timing, verbal interpretation, client interaction, and the fluid integration of intuition with technical knowledge.
We review platforms because we want our students to have positive, educational experiences when they seek professional readings. A bad experience with an unprofessional reader can discourage a student and damage the reputation of tarot practice as a whole. Our reviews aim to guide students toward platforms and readers that model the kind of ethical, skilled practice we teach.
